The passing of Georgena M. Blizzard wife of the late Douglas M. Blizzard occurred Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Pine Grove Nursing Home with her family by her side. Born in 1918 in New Maryland, N.B., Georgena was the daughter of the late George and Myrtle (Hayward) O’Leary. Georgena attended the New Maryland School and helped on the family farm. She later married and moved to Morrison Mills. After a number of years the family moved to Lincoln. After raising three boys, Georgena accepted a position with the City of Fredericton as Matron of the Hillcrest Municipal Home on York Street in Fredericton. After closure of Hillcrest Home, Georgena accepted a position with the Department of Social Services in the Provincial Government. Upon retirement Georgena and Doug enjoyed travelling throughout Canada and the United States and shared many memories with family and friends. Georgena was a life member of The Pythian Sisters, having filled every office in the Lodge. She was a member of Christ Church Parish Church where she belonged to the ACW and the Quilters Group. Georgena had many talents along with quilting, she loved to knit and to decorate special occasion cakes. She was involved with “Meals on Wheels” until her eighty-eighth year and felt she was giving back to the community by helping to feed “the older folks”. Georgena will be remembered for her love of her family. She is survived by her sons, Earle (Barbara) and Tom (Nancy). She was a loving Nan to her six grandchildren, Kathy Shannon (Josh), Susan Blizzard, Brent Blizzard (Lisa), Shelly Blizzard-Jones (Bill), J.D. Blizzard (Krista) and Tom Blizzard; also her step-grandchildren Denys and Kyle McKay. She was also a much loved Great Nan to Jesse Blizzard, Michael Shannon, Hannah and Emily Blizzard and Gareth, Claire and Owen Jones. Also left to mourn are brother Albert O’Leary (Shirley) and sisters Myrtle Good, Shirley Foster and Many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, Georgena was predeceased by son Arthur, grandson Michael, daughters-in-law Darlene and Debbie and siblings Tom, John, Gordon, Basil, George, Gerald, Alice, Margaret, Beatrice, Joyce and Rae. Honorary Pallbearers will be Georgena’s six grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Bishop’s Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton on Monday, April 18, 2011 from 2PM to 4PM and 7PM to 9PM with a funeral service to be held from Bishop’s Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 11:00 AM with Archdeacon John Sharpe officiating. Interment in the Forest Hill Cemetery at a later date. The family suggests memorial donations to Pine Grove Nursing Home – Pine Grove Foundation.
