Donald Alexander  Campbell

LCol (R) Donald Alexander Campbell, CD, 76, of Amherst passed away peacefully surrounded by family on August 8, 2017 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Upper Nappan.
Born in Montreal, QC, and raised in Stellarton, NS, Don was a son of the late WgCdr Donald William and Myrtle (McLaughlin) Campbell and was predeceased by his wife, Sheilah Marjorie (Marj) Murray.
He is survived by his children, Linda (David Hansen), of Ottawa, Rob, of Amherst and Stacy (Patrick Furlong), of Cole Harbour.
Don was a devoted and loving grandfather to Kirsten Hansen, Andrew Furlong and Benjamin Furlong. He was a special brother to Charles (Sharon Waxman) of Bedford and Rhea (Wallace Diamond) of Flower’s Cove, NL. He was also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Don attended St. Francis Xavier University where he obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration and his Bachelor of Education degrees, and Université de Moncton where he obtained his Master of Business Administration and Master of Education degrees.
Don started his military career in the Air Force Reserve Program at St. Francis Xavier University in 1957. He served with the 1st Battalion Nova Scotia Highlanders (North), receiving his Commission in 1963. He also worked with the Cadet Instructor List. Don retired as the Commanding Officer of the 32 (Moncton) Service Battalion in 1996.
In his civilian life, Don was an educator, teaching in high schools in East Pictou and Amherst. He also was an instructor for both Mount Allison University and St. Francis Xavier University. He also operated a private trade school, Desktop Computer Systems Ltd.
In his spare time, Don was an avid reader, enjoyed scuba diving, was a woodworker and photographer, but his most favourite pastime was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902) 667-9906 between the hours of 3-5 and 7-9 pm on Thursday, August 10th.
Following an intimate graveside service at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 11th, friends are invited to toast Don’s life at the funeral home at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Don’s memory can be made to the charity of your choice.
