Kathryn Clara McClary
June 25, 1925 – August 5, 2017
Kathryn Clara (McClary) Mullett passed away at Gables Lodge, Amherst, on August 5, 2017. Her family is comforted by memories of a life well lived. Born in River Hebert, NS, daughter of Sarah (King) and Aubrey McClary, Kathryn (Kay to her friends) was the eldest of eight children. Growing up in a large rural family when war was breaking out in Europe, she developed a strong work ethic early, and began working in Amherst as soon as she graduated from high school. This experience in the dry goods section of the "Five and Ten" department store, led to her establishing and operating "Kay’s Fabrics" in 1965, a business that was successful for almost 20 years. While a young girl working in Amherst, she also met her life partner, Cyril, whom she married in 1944, before he departed for the Pacific Coast on a Canadian naval ship. Kay and Cyril met life’s opportunities, challenges, joys and sorrows, as a real team for 66 years.
Kay participated in community sports throughout her life, first as a teenage member of a championship softball team at River Hebert High, and later as a very active member of the Amherst Curling Club, and the Amherst Golf Club with Cyril. Involvement in sports competitions encouraged them to travel. Eventually they were able to enjoy a well earned retirement, during which years they joined other Amherst and Maritime snowbirds on South Carolina and Florida golf courses.
An active member of Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church, Kay taught Sunday School for young children for many years, a commitment that gave her much joy. She was also a member of the Elizabeth Temple, No. 6, Order of the Pythian Sisters.
A loving and caring mother, sister, and loyal friend to many, Kay will be missed by her daughter Marilyn Mullett (Charles Cook) of Upper Tantallon, NS; sisters Hazel Daborn, River Hebert; Freda Belliveau (Donald) Joggins; brother Roger McClary (Irma), Sackville, NB; sisters-in-law Anna McClary, Irene McClary and Lois McClary, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Kay was predeceased by her husband Cyril S. Mullett in 2011, and by her brothers, Earl (Bun), Douglas, Arthur, and Guy McClary, as well as brother-in-law Kingsley Daborn.
Visitation will be at Furlong Jones Funeral Home, 70 Church Street, Amherst, on Wednesday, August 9 at 1:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm in the same location. A time of sharing and refreshment will follow, hosted by the United Church Women.
Any donations would be welcomed for the Cumberland Regional Health Care Foundation, or for Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church, or a charity of your choice.
Sharing of memories and condolences may be sent to the family by visiting Kay's online memorial at www.furlongjones.ca or through the Furlong~Jones Funeral Home Facebook
