Thelma Leone (Anderson) MacDonald died peacefully at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, N.S. on April 14, 2011.
Born in Glace Bay on August 13, 1925 to the late Roddy and Mary (Beaton) Anderson, Tellie grew up on Brookside Street and later lived in Halifax, Sydney, and Lunenburg before settling in North Sydney with her family in 1960. She was a long-time member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church. She returned to Glace Bay in 2007 when she became a resident of Seaview Manor. Tellie was very active in Home & School Associations at both Central and Thompson High School in North Sydney where she served a number of terms in various capacities on the executive committee. She was a tireless volunteer, canvassing for many community organizations including the March of Dimes, the Canadian Cancer Society, and the United Way.
Besides her parents Tellie was predeceased in 1998 by her husband of fifty years, Donald Ian (D.I.) MacDonald and in 2000 by son Ian, North Sydney.
Tellie was the last surviving member of her family. She was predeceased by brothers, Lorne (Sydney River), Ross (Berwick) and sisters, Fran (Antigonish), Amour (Glace Bay/Seaview Manor) and Rea (Glace Bay).
She is survived by sons Donn (Janice Ronayne) Dartmouth, David, Halifax, James (Shelley Decorby), Halifax; grandchildren, Meagan and Morgan MacDonald, Halifax, James Keigan, North Sydney; and one great-grandchild, Ian James Keigan, North Sydney; sister-in-law, Marge Anderson, (Berwick); brother-in-law, Earl Demont (Glace Bay); and many nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Tellie’s wishes there will be a family funeral service officiated by Reverend David Luker of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney.
On Monday, April 18 at 3 p.m. the family would like to invite Tellie’s friends and neighbors to join them at a reception in the Memorial Room of Knox United Church, Commercial Street, Glace Bay. Cremation has taken place with burial to follow at a later date.
For the last four years Tellie has enjoyed wonderful care and companionship while a resident of Seaview Manor in Glace Bay. The family would like to sincerely express our gratitude and admiration for staff and residents there.
