Passed peacefully away at home on August 15th, 2017 in her 90th year. Predeceased by husband Hayward Legge on March 4th, 2013, daughter Barbara Ann Squires; parents Ralph Peter and Susie Beatrice Squires; and brothers David and Frederick. Leaving to celebrate her long and amazing years, her sister Alma Piercey (Robert); her children Joan, Sandra, Linda, Phil, Mary, Bill, Don, Doreen and Bob; 30 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Hayward and Dorothy married in 1944 and left Broad Cove but returned to St. Phillip's in 1956, to a house they had built and made it their life long home. Hayward worked for the province in various administrative departments. He supplemented his earnings by being a general laborer with numerous local construction and plumbing companies. He fished the waters of Conception Bay and taxied the streets of old St. John's and towns beyond. Dorothy, a stay at home mother, certainly had her hands full. But at 68 years of age, began travelling. She skidooed in Yellowknife, NWT, ate cherry pie with Howie and Grace Meeker in Parksville, British Columbia, picked strawberries in the Okanagan Valley, sat in Prime Minister Chretien's chair in Ottawa, dined at the finest Greek restaurants on the famous Danforth in Toronto, and flew in the flight deck of a Canadian Airlines, Boeing 737 from Stanfield to Pearson International Airport. She introduced Dishwater Wes to Finesse on "TopSail" Road but wasn't fussy about Mrs. Koffin or Mr. Yung. Meanwhile, Hayward remained at home in his beloved vegetable garden, his evenings spent at the kitchen table writing poetry and prose, and possibly wetting his whistle. A life well lived and loved. As all who are lucky and blessed with such longevity, their lives were filled with so many special friends and memories. But as a young couple of newly weds in the big City, t'was there they met and remained life long friends with Molly and Paddy Fitzgerald. In St. Phillip's their happiness was increased even more with the return of Hayward's brother Clifton and sweetheart wife Laurie from Bell Island, and buying a home just down the road. Christian burial will take place on Saturday, August 26th at 2 pm at St. Phillip's Anglican Cemetery. No words can express the gratitude and love for all those who cared for Dorothy. Do an act of kindness today and everyday for someone ~ She would like that.
