Bill White was born in St John's, Newfoundland, the second of two children to Eric and Carol White, and died peacefully in Whitby, Ontario, surrounded by family. Bill was a loving husband to Shirley (nee Matthews); a proud father of his children Bradford (Kristina Bugayong), Darren (Debra nee Munson) and Christine (David Serviss); and a devoted Poppa to his adored grandchildren: Sophia White, Andrew and Samuel White, and Kennedy, Riley, Finn and Willem Serviss. Bill was also a close brother-in-law to Yvonne King (George), and Judy Strong (Tom) and a warm-hearted uncle to Brian King, Lori Piercey, Maria Murphy, Laura Strong, Matthew Strong, and Karen Nell-Bennett, Audrey and Peter Nell, Marjorie (predeceased) and Clarence Jackman, Blanche, Cyril and Bill Vey were also very special in-laws. Bill was a loyal and dedicated friend to many during his 76 years. Growing up in St. John's, Bill loved all sports, especially hockey and baseball; and was a member of the Boy Scouts. Throughout life his true loves included his wife and family, geotechnical engineering, and his insatiable thirst for knowledge and world geography. A very mindful and methodical person, he truly enjoyed the small pleasures in life - The Yankees, The Jays, biking, cross country skiing, and books, books, and more books. Bill attended Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS, now Dalhousie). He was a registered P.Eng in Ontario, Newfoundland, and New Brunswick. His Civil Engineering career flourished - working for larger firms, building his own consulting practices, and also teaching at Memorial; he often left the house in the morning with three separate briefcases under his arm! Always good natured and humble, Bill White personified the values of integrity, strength, and self-discipline. Often a man of few words, what he did share was quick witted, insightful, educated, and splashed with humour. August 3, 2017 Bill celebrated his 54th wedding anniversary to Shirley, his best friend and the love of his life, with his family in Whitby, their home since 2013. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Carnell's Funeral Home, Freshwater Road, St. John's, Newfoundland. Funeral service will be held at Gower Street United Church, St. John's, on September 11 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, any donations would be gratefully appreciated for Prostate Cancer Research (The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation) or Gower Street United Church.
