Sister Frances Vallas died peacefully on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney.
Born in New Waterford, NS, on June 1, 1925, Frances was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Mary (Rossos) Vallas, who immigrated to Canada from the Greek Island of Santorini.
Frances entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in January 1955, pronounced her first vows on January 15, 1957, and her final vows on August 9, 1963. That same year, Sister Frances began her years of service in the Congregation by accepting a teaching position at St. Mary’s School, Truro, and later transferred to Cobequid Educational Centre in Truro, NS.
In 1972 she moved to Antigonish, where she assumed the position of Business Office Registrar and Bursar at Mount St. Bernard College. In 1994, Frances moved to Summerside, PE, where she served as local leader at St. Mary’s Convent. In 2001 she returned to her native Cape Breton, specifically, St. Theresa Convent Sydney, where she volunteered with the local literacy program. In 2011 Sister Frances retired to Parkland Cape Breton, and in January 2017, her health declining, she moved to our CND Health Care Centre. Throughout these years of ministry, Sister Frances served capably, and always with care and compassion. Her life-long commitment of generous service was sustained daily by her deep and unwavering faith.
Sister Frances was predeceased by her only brother, Mike Vallas, and sisters, Marie (Jim) Coleman, Cleo (Don) MacKay, Catherine (James) Chisholm, Sr. Angelina Vallas, CND, Irene (Dan Hughie) McPherson, Pauline (Bill) Wade and Uwana Vallas.
While Frances is the last surviving member of her immediate family, she leaves behind many nieces and nephews, who cherish wonderful memories of their much loved “Aunt Frank”.
Visitation for Sister Frances will be held Friday, October 20 from 2-4 p.m. at
T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Sydney, with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, NS.
