William (Bill) Clemens

Lieu de naissance : Leesburg, Virginie, États-Unis

Lieu de décès : États-Unis

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a loving husband and father, William (Bill) Clemens.
He was born in Leesburg, Virginia in 1947.
Bill received his BA from North Carolina University in 1968, then attended the University of Tennessee and obtained a Ph.D in psychology under the supervision of beloved friend Jasper Brener in 1969.
Bill then travelled to Cape Breton to teach psychology at the Sydney campus of St.Fx University in 1972. He was instrumental in the development of the Department of Psychology at the College of Cape Breton, the University College of Cape Breton, and Cape Breton University. He was a specialist in the area of physiological psychology and made significant contributions in the area of heart rate behavior and physiology.
He took several sabbaticals over the years to further his research studies. First was at UCLA in 1976, then he travelled to University of Hull in Yorkshire, U.K. with Jasper Brener around 1983. He did 2 sabbaticals at Stony Brook University in New York; one in late 80's, one in 1995.
Bill rose to Full Professor and received Professor Emeritus status upon his retirement in 2001. He also served as Chair of Department of Psychology and Dean of Arts and Science. His reputation as a researcher was international in scope but his career also had a strong impact locally. He was a constant supporter of psychology students and would offer advice to many over the years.
During his marriage of 25 years to Anita, he was blessed with the arrival of his daughter, Amy. She has given him 22 years of joy and he was incredibly proud of her and her accomplishments. The addition of his loving dog, Kirra has put a smile on his face every day for the past 6 years. Bill was a good old boy from Virginia and was often referred to as Billy Bob by his WNPC buddies. His best friend, Boe MacIntyre put that name on him and it stuck. Anyone that knew Bill well knew what a genuine, caring person he was even when he had his cranky moments. He was often referred to as a toasted marshmallow, crusty on the outside and mushy on the inside.
Bill is survived by loving wife, Anita (McLean) Clemens; beautiful daughter, Amy Catherine Clemens; loyal dog, Kirra; father-in-law, David McLean; mother-in-law, Heather McLean; sister-in-law, Kim McLean; daughter, Jennifer Easterly Krasowski (Paul); and grandson, Carl.
He was also predeceased by father, John William Clemens; mother, Mary Morton Riddle Clemens (Polly); sister, Catharine Clemens Foss (Kitty); and brother, John Clemens.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be at Chant's Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney on Sunday, October 22 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. with a memorial service at 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA or any charity organization.
Online condolences may be made to the family at www.chantfuneralhome.ca.
