Joan Whelan (nee Craig)
Date de décès : 27 octobre 2017
It is with much sadness and deep regret that we announce the passing of one of Bell Island's staunchest supporters and Newfoundland and Labrador's greatest advocates for those with disabilities, Joan Whelan, at the age of 77 years. Joan spent the majority of her years educating the youth of Bell Island, and defending and fighting for the rights of those unable to fight for themselves. She would be among the first to help those in need. Having lived most of her life with her own physical limitations did not deter the energy and enthusiasm she put into helping people help themselves by cutting through the red tape of bureaucracy. Friday, October 27, 2017 heaven received its newest angel. Joan, predeceased by her parents Stan and Ada Craig, has been reunited with her husband, Jim, and daughter, Judy. She leaves behind 5 loving children, Miriam (George) Brown, Craig (Rose), Jamie (Jenn), Kelly (Paul), and Grant (Lorraine), as well as 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 6 brothers, Aiden (Mary), Martin (Betty), Dan with whom she resided, Pat (Joyce), Philip (Judy), and Shawn (Marg); 2 sisters Beth McLean (Paul) and Marg Hussey (Freeman). As well, left to mourn are a large number of nieces and nephews, in-laws, many friends and special friends Ursula Lahey, Marg Bickford, Bern and Anne Marie Metcalfe. Joan has left an indelible mark on Bell Island, and will be sadly missed by all. Visitations will take place at Pendergast's Funeral Home Tuesday 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Wednesday 12 :00 to 9:00 pm and Thursday 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. A celebration of Joan's life and legacy will take place at St. Michael's Church, Bell Island, NL on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 2:00pm with interment to follow at the RC Cemetery, Bell Island, NL. Special thanks to the staff of the Bell Island hospital and Pendergast's Funeral Home. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory may be made to Operation Sunshine, St. Michael's Parish or the Wabana Boys' and Girls' Club. Reception to follow at St. Michael's Parish Hall.
