Nellie Catherine GILLIS

Nellie Catherine GILLIS

Date de décès : 28 octobre 2017

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Nellie, 97, on Saturday, October 28, 2017, in the Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Born June 25, 1920, Nellie was the daughter of the late John R and Annie (MacQuarrie) Gillis. She took on the mothering role of the family at the age of 10 and never looked back. After moving back to Skye Glen she married and started her family. She kept the family home in order and welcomed many a visitor with her lure of fresh baked goodies and home-cooked meals. It was often mentioned how many people she would feed during a summer with the helpers for haymaking and all the relatives who would return home for the summer. She loved her family and friends and was great to keep in touch with everyone. She was a member of the Stewart United Church and the UCW. She enjoyed going to the weekly card games in Skye Glen and Mabou, more for the friendships than the cards. Her mind was sharp right up until the end but the loneliness of losing her Myles was too much to bear.
Left to grieve are her two sons, Wesley (Mary C) and Bruce (Debbie) both of Skye Glen; granddaughter, Trudy, Skye Glen; grandson, Randy (Michelle), Port Hawkesbury and great-granddaughter, Alyssa, who was always a source of entertainment and endless hugs and kisses. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Evelyn, Skye Glen and Catherine, New Glasgow, and many nieces and nephews. Nellie was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Nellie was predeceased by her husband, Myles; daughter, Nancy Marie; brothers, Ernie, Al, Lawrence and Ross; sisters, Gladys and Kaye.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday from Stewart United Church, Whycocomagh with Rev. Rachel Campbell officiating. Burial in Skye Glen Cemetery. Following the burial, there will be a reception in the Skye Glen Community Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family are asking for donations to be made to the Skye Glen & Centreville Community Hall or Stewart United Church.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com.
