Johnston, Eleanor Winnifred, 71, Birch Street, New Glasgow, passed away peacefully in Palliative Care at the Aberdeen Hospital on December 4th, 2017. Born in Montreal, PQ, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Christabel ( MacIntosh ) Hirsch.
In her early years, Eleanor annually visited a family cottage at Melmerby with her family, where she met and later married J. W. Ross MacLeod in 1967. She did her Registered Nurse training at the Montreal General Hospital, and later worked at Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow. After Ross died in 1977, both she and her boys Graham and Cameron were fortunate and lucky that Eleanor was able to find another love and lifelong partner in 1979, Robert. Together, they built and completed their family with the addition of a baby girl, Christine in 1981. Eleanor was a faithful member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Mom had many loves in life but those most important included her family, especially her grandchildren; the cottage at Melmerby where she enjoyed petunias, the cottage deck with family, friends, and spirits, the beach, ocean and the waves; her many bridge dates and her bridge girlfriends and contributing to her community by volunteering at the hospital gift shop and as a VON driver.
She is survived by her husband Robert, daughter Christine (Matthew) Daley and their children Luke and Ella, Upper Rawdon, N.S.; sons Cameron MacLeod (Jane) and their children Ruairi and Rosie, Aiken, S.C.; Graham (Janet) MacLeod and their children Ross and Jenna, Pictou, N.S.; brother Robert Hirsch, sister-in-law Geneva, Fredericton, N.B. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her first husband Ross and a brother Douglas, Calgary, AB. Visitation will be 7-9 PM Wednesday in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, New Glasgow. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit or the Canadian Cancer Society.
