Charles Corke

CORKE, CHARLES BSc, MSc, PhD - Charles Thomas Corke, age 90, of Goderich and formerly of Stratford and New Glasgow, N.S., passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital, Goderich on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Born in Stratford, he was the son of the late Cecil and Ann (Nicholson) Corke. Before the war Charles became a druggist apprentice. During the war he was in the Signal Corps, Suffield Alberta as a photographer. After the war he began his University studies and completed his B.Sc and M.Sc at University of Western Ontario earning a Gold Medal for proficiency in Botany. He and his wife Jean then moved to New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA while he studied Soil Microbiology at Rutgers University under Dr. Selman Waksman, Nobel Prize winner. Charles earned his PhD in Soil Microbiology in 1954. Returning to Canada he accepted a lecturer position at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, Ont. He obtained tenure and his full professorship at the Microbiology and Soil Sciences Department during the period of time when the OAC became known as the University of Guelph, Ontario. Following retirement in the 1980's he and Jean moved to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia where they enjoyed their home, grandchildren and developed a love for the Nova Scotian countryside and citizens. His legacy to his family remains in his love of nature and in the search for knowledge. His many graduate students benefited from his dedicated teachings. His body of work as a researcher will continue to be referenced by academics and scientists alike. Beloved husband of Jean (Stowe) Corke whom he married on January 1, 1945. Loving father of Patricia "Dianne" Corke (deceased), Pamela Ann Corke and husband Mario Courchesne of Rothesay, N.B., Steven Charles Corke of Guelph and Christopher Charles Corke of Bayfield. Lovingly remembered by a special daughter-in-law Donna Corke of Guelph. Cherished grandfather of Philip (Melissa) MacDonald, Paul (Nicole) Shaw, New Glasgow, Nova Scotia and Jennifer Corke, Guelph Ont. Great- grandfather of Samantha Murray, Hailey Shaw and "Connor John MacDonald 4 years old" of New Glasgow Nova Scotia. Also survived by cousins Ian Corke and family, Leslie Lamb and family, Tom de Gryp and family, special friends Dr. Robert Burrell, Alberta and Dr. David Juurlink of Toronto and family. A special heartfelt thank you to friends at Goderich Place Retirement Residence and the Doctors and staff at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital, Goderich.
