DeLory, John H., P. Eng.
John passed in Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax on Dec. 23 at the age of 91.
He was born and raised in Georgetown, PEI, the second of eight children born to the late Fred and Cecilia (Cullen) DeLory. Though he moved from the Island for his education and career as a young man, he returned often to his cottage there. It was a place of great happiness for he and his family to gather, and where he fully indulged his love of tools and building things.
John is survived by his wife of 55 years, Doris (Landsky), his children Michael, Joanne (Mark Scott) and Alison (Manfred Gangl), and his grandchildren: Ian Scott, Curtis Gangl and Eric Gangl. No one in his family ever recalls him raising his voice to them; he was a ceaselessly proud, loving and gentle husband, father and grandfather. His many quirks and ability to embellish (and repeat) stories added entertainment to their lives. John was interested in others, and though often reluctant to socialize, once at a party he surprised himself with his enjoyment of people.
John’s surviving siblings are Dr. Fred (June), Cullen (Barbara), and Bernice (Bill Melanson), and sisters-in-law Bev DeLory, Burdette DeLory, Elaine Kane and Joan Landsky. He was predeceased by brothers Richard, Stephen and Dr. Maurice (Mike), and his sister, Sheila. It is interesting to note that four DeLory brothers (Fred, John, Richard and Cullen) were all professional engineers.
John was a veteran of WWII and training as a navy pilot in England in 1945 when the war ended. He stayed in London after The Blitz to help clean up. After he was discharged and regained his health, John attended McGill University, graduating as an electrical engineer in 1951. He worked with Westinghouse Co. and the U.S. Corps of engineers in Goose Bay and along the DEW Line in Labrador.
John spent most of his career working as the Senior Electrical Engineer for Defense Construction Canada, based in Halifax with frequent trips to Ottawa. In retirement he served as technical adviser (electrical) to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.
John was a Past President of the Association of Professional Engineers of NS, and honourary life members of APENS. In 1980 he was awarded the APENS Service Award for outstanding service. In 2008, Engineers Canada and APENS awarded John the title of Engineers Canada Fellow for exceptional voluntary service to the engineering profession.
John’s family is grateful to the excellent caregivers at Camp Hill Hospital, and to family and friends who supported them as his health failed. Most of all they are thankful to John himself, for making their lives more amusing and for his unconditional love.
