VANDER HONING, Maaike “May” - 80, of Kentville, formerly of Aylesford, Kings County, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 in Evergreen Home for Special Care, Kentville. Born in Damwoude, Friesland, The Netherlands, she was a daughter of the late Jan and Akke (Wolters) Visser. Prior to her marriage, while living in Holland, she was employed as an in-home care worker. After immigrating to Nova Scotia, she dedicated her time to her family. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Movement, attended various Baptist churches throughout the area and listened to CVCR Christian Radio. Her faith was more important than the building in which she worshipped. She faithfully attended Christian Women’s Group and enjoyed knitting, especially socks and mittens for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed caring for people, looking after her family and she loved her cat. She is survived by three sons, Andries “Andy” (Audrey), Centreville; John (Ann) Hultink, Lacombe, Alberta; Henry (Diane) Hultink, Beamsville, Ontario; three daughters, Agnes (David) Hazelwood, Aylesford; Wendy Harvey (Tim Thornton), Collingwood, Ontario; Iena (Harry) Van’t Foort, Brinston, Ontario; three sisters, Iena (Gerben) Terpstra, Ontario; Baukeje Dykstra, Scotsburn, Pictou County; Geertje “Kay” (Don) Vander Tol, Alberta; five brothers, Arnold (Hilda), Dartmouth; Cecil (Diane), Vancouver; Gerry (Carol), Truro; Ooege (Laney), Alberta; John (Faye), New Glasgow; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her former husband, Hendrick “Hank”; a sister and brother-in-law, Sietske (Henk) Rook; a grandson, Scott Van’t Foort and a nephew, Andries Vander Honing. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011, Reverend Wayne Merrill officiating. Burial took place in the Aylesford Union Cemetery. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff, volunteers and care givers of Evergreen Home for Special Care for their kindness and compassion. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
