Marilyn Joyce Howard (nee Kirkpatrick)
September 11, 1935 – January 20, 2018
Marilyn Howard, late of Prince Albert, SK, passed away on January 20, 2018 at the age of 82 years. She leaves to mourn her passing her three daughters: Janice (Kelly) Autet, Colleen (Jayson) Clunie, and Sharon (Rusty) Clunie, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mom was born and raised in Bawlf, Alberta, the eldest of three daughters of Dorothy and Ralph Kirkpatrick: Lyn, Lorraine and Louise; and moved to Prince Albert, SK, in April of 1948. There she attended Queen Mary School, PACI, and a Secretarial course and began working at the Dept. of Natural Resources. She also worked at breweries in Prince Albert and Calgary. She had met Glen Howard in Prince Albert in grade 9 and they were together on and off until they married on August 16, 1958. In 1959, Mom’s mother Dorothy married Dad’s father Gordon Howard, giving Mom and Dad new step-sisters and step-brothers that have all remained close. After receiving his diploma in Dentistry in Edmonton in 1960, Lyn and Glen and newborn daughter Janice moved back to Prince Albert, to join Glen’s father Gordon in a Dentistry practice, where they would have two more daughters: Colleen and Sharon . In 1971, they moved back to Edmonton, so that Dad could obtain his degree in Orthodontics, which eventually led them back to Prince Albert in 1975 where they lived until Dad retired and then moved to Emma Lake. Mom said this was her favorite place to live. Dad had grown up at “the lake” and we girls and mom had the same experience spending weekends packing up and moving there for the summers. Mom liked to keep busy needlepointing, doing crosswords, cross country skiing, playing cards, and volunteering her time over the years to Brownies, Calvary Church, and the Little Gallery in Prince Albert. Unfortunately, Dad didn’t have many years at the cabin and passed away far too early in 1997. Mom continued to live there on her own until about 2010, then moved back to Prince Albert, leaving the squirrels around the cabin to celebrate. She always felt very lucky that all of her daughters and their families were in town to help her out. Mom was an immensely private person and despite her health problems was an incredibly strong woman. The death of her husband was hard to bear but the deaths in 2011 of her beloved grandson, Max, and her granddaughter’s partner, Danny, were “almost too hard to bear” she said. Nevertheless, she did and found so much joy in her grandkids and her great-grandkids. Mom’s sharp mind thankfully never left her right up until her death getting to say goodbye to all those she loved and in turn we got to say how much she was loved. We will all miss her sharp wit, practical jokes, sense of humor, love of the little things and her curiosity about everything! In lieu of other tributes, donations in memory of Marilyn and Glen may be sent to Ducks Unlimited. A Private Family Interment will be held. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca.
