It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce Horace Clifton Lovell passed away peacefully at the age of 97 surrounded by his family on Jan.24, 2018.
Horace was born in North Sydney to the late John and Emma Lovell.
A veteran of WW2, he served overseas until the end of the war and then worked as a coal miner, retiring from No.12 Colliery. Growing up in North Sydney near the race track, he became an avid horseman. He raised and raced many horses throughout his life. Horace was one of the inaugural directors of the Atlantic Sires Stakes and was inducted into the Cape Breton Horseman’s Association Hall of Fame in 1991. He was a founding member of the Fort Petrie Historical Society.
Horace is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Verna (Barry) Lovell; children, Pat (Lynda), George (Kay), Trudy (Greg), Phyllis (David) Crombie, Horace (Maureen); eight grandchildren, Ralph, Barry, Jeffrey, Kelly, Tyler, Melissa, Colin and Robert; great-grandchildren, Connor, Maya, Sydney, Wes, Keagan, Abigail, Aiden, Matthew, Emily, Meghan and Norah.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Banks, George and Everett; sisters, Phyllis Murray and Irene Jardine and great-grandson, Brandon Taylor Muise.
There will be no visitation. Funeral mass will take place on January 27, 2018 at 1 p.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be take place in Lingan Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave., New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
