With appreciation for a life well lived, the family of Kermit Wendell Phillips, announces his peaceful passing which occurred February 3, 2018.
Born September 23, 1935 in Fredericton New Brunswick, Wendell was a well-established retail businessman. Having begun his career with F.W. Woolworth, Dad worked as a store manager at many locations in Atlantic Canada. This led him to Cape Breton, where years later he became owner of the New Waterford Quality Store and the Value Centre. Dad found great pleasure in retail and being helpful to everyone. In his later years, he worked at Wilson's Home Hardware. There he was known as "Wendell from Home Hardware", and retired in his 80th year.
Wendell had great pride in Cape Breton. He absolutely cherished the people, live music and the culture. Wendell took every opportunity to attend music concerts through the Island - particularly fiddle performances. Dad was a supporter of hockey and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
He will be lovingly remembered as having a story for every occasion. His stories usually began with, "This is the honest to God's truth...." or many other notable quotes.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy, and his second wife, Louise; his parents, Kermit and Mary Phillips; sister, Carole in infancy, and brothers, Russell and Lowell.
Wendell is survived by his daughters, Cheryl (Bill Reid), Saint John, NB, Kathy (Larry MacLachlan), Montreal, PQ, Kelli (Rick Bates), Lethbridge, AB and Jana (Harry MacKinley), Port Coquitlam, BC, and his grandchildren, Erin Reid Terrio (Adam), Conner Reid, Dexter Bradley, Leyland Bradley, Maxwell Bates, Brownyn Bates and Ashenafi MacKinley. As well as, his sisters, Helen Phillips, Ottawa, ON and Mary Janet Clift (Harry), Saint Andrews, NB, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
We would like to thank the nurses and doctors at Saint John Regional Hospital Oncology and Internal Medicine department and to Bobby's Hospice for their immeasurable care and compassion for our father and family.
In keeping with our father's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. For those who wish, memorial donations can be made to Bobby's Hospice 385 Dufferin Row Saint John, NB or to a hospice in your community.
