Anna Elizabeth Nicholson, age 91, passed peacefully surrounded by her family at Alderwood Rest Home on February 4, 2018.
Anna was born in Baddeck, NS in 1926, daughter of the late Angus and Winnie MacLeod.
After high school, Anna worked in Halifax for 2 years with the Department of Education before entering nursing school. She graduated from the Glace Bay General Hospital as an RN in 1949. Following graduation she worked at the Inverness Memorial Hospital, the Victoria General Hospital, the Halifax Infirmary, and in later years at Alderwood Rest Home. Anna married Frank Nicholson in 1950. During their married years, Frank’s career with CBC resulted in their living in Bridgewater, Halifax, Toronto, St John’s and Sydney. In 1981, they moved back to their Baddeck roots and settled in Big Baddeck near the Nicholson family homestead. Anna was a lifelong member of the United Church of Canada and she was a member of the UCW, Hospice Board of Victoria County and the Arm of Gold Seniors Club. People and health related programs were always of interest to her.
Anna was predeceased by her husband, Frank, who died in 1992. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Richard McCurdy), Big Baddeck, Frances (Laura Collins), Montreal; her son, Donald (Pam Ellsworth), Big Baddeck; her grandsons, Glen (Deborah), John (Sarah;) and her great-grandson, Alistair. Anna is survived by sisters, Jessie MacLeod and Agnes MacLeod, Baddeck.
The family would like to thank all the caregivers who assisted Anna throughout the last few years and especially all the staff of Alderwood for their compassionate care over the last nine months.
A memorial service will be held at Greenwood United Church in Baddeck on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 2 p.m. A reception will immediately follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alderwood Rest Home or the Hospice Society of Victoria County.
