Henrietta “Hank” Sampson-Curtis

Henrietta “Hank” Sampson-Curtis

Date de décès : 9 février 2018

After a very full and well lived life, Henrietta "Hank" Sampson-Curtis passed away peacefully at the Halifax Infirmary on February 9, 2018 after a brief illness. She was born in Sydney, Cape Breton on October 19, 1921; the youngest child of Habib and Sarah (Libbus) Joseph.
Henrietta is survived by her loving husband, George Curtis; his son, Bernard (Lynette), and their three children, Christopher, Brandy and Leslie.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
A special thanks is extended to Hank’s niece Pam and her husband Carter Chapdelaine for the love and kindness they always gave so willingly.
Hank had many close friends and in recent years spent many wonderful days with Kelly and Ed Peckham and Nancy and Dennis Gudger. Aunt Hank, as she was affectionately known will be missed by her many nieces, nephews and cousins but will be fondly remembered for the wonderful role she played in all their lives. Everyone loved to visit Aunt Hank and you never left empty handed as she always insisted you take some freshly baked rolls or a bottle of beets, perhaps some of her famous strawberry jam and if you were really lucky; some fatyres.
Henrietta was predeceased by her first husband, Roy Sampson; her sister, Amelia (Thomas) Somers; brothers, Joseph (Katherine), Abraham (Helen), David ‘Dates’ (Mabel) and Samuel (Thelma); brother-in-law, Victor Sampson, and sister-in-law, Evelyn Gillis.
When she was a young woman Hank moved to Halifax. She was employed at the Nova Scotian Hotel where she met her first husband, Roy. They shared many wonderful years together and always looked forward to trips to their property in Lake Ainslie. Her visits to Sydney were always a highlight and she enjoyed sharing her time with family and friends where inevitably a tarbish or cribbage game would break out. Hank was also very proud of her Lebanese heritage and loved to have a crowd around where she would proudly serve kibbie, grape leaves, and rice and yuchani. Hank never missed a family event at the Cedars Club and if she was not in the kitchen helping out; she could be found out on the dance floor. She loved to dance.
Hank was always on the move and those who knew her were constantly amazed by her energy, fun loving spirit and enthusiasm for life. Whether she was heading to the lanes to bowl in one of the many leagues she belonged to or meeting with her Monday night girls’ club, she was often the first one there and the last to leave.
In 2016 Hank married her longtime companion George Curtis. Their relationship was an inspiration to all and they continued to spend time doing the things they both loved. Their independence, commitment to living a full and active life and devotion to each other was a special relationship that was truly remarkable.
Hank touched so many lives in her ninety-six years. Her kindness and generosity will live on in our memories and thoughts of her will always bring a smile. What a life!!
At her request there will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter’s Church, 10 Maple St., Dartmouth on Tuesday, February 13 at 10 a.m., Rev. Jim Richards officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the David Nelson Joseph Playground Fund at the Sydney Credit Union or to a charity of choice.
Online condolences can be made at: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com.
We will miss you Hanky-Panky.
