Robert William "Prowse" Jerrett

Date de décès : 2 mars 2018

With family by his side, Dad passed quietly on March 2, 2018. He has joined his adored and adoring wife Olive in a new adventure, always at each other’s side.

The son of Winnie (Parsons) and Harold Jerrett, Dad was born in the family home in Harbour Grace, NL on August 11, 1925. At 3 months, he and his mother joined his father in Corner Brook, NL where he lived for most of his life and was an active member of First United Church. His young years were spent hiking and biking, playing hockey and baseball, skiing and doing whatever boys do as friends together. He also managed to sneak out of his room after bedtime many times by climbing down a tree outside his window! University “on the mainland” followed (Newfoundland was not yet part of Canada) and then time in the Canadian Armed Forces during WWII.

Dad’s first date with our Mom, Olive Bugden, was Sept. 28, 1947. They married August 16, 1952 and were inseparable through their 53 years of marriage until Mom’s death in 2005. They had many adventures together, traveling over the bumpy highways in Newfoundland, berry picking and picnicking with friends, and were eventually joined by Carol in 1959 and Alison in 1964. Soon the car towed a travel trailer as the family stayed in parks across the island. The trailer eventually gave way to a cabin on Pasadena Beach where they hosted great gatherings of family and friends. Winters in Florida followed retirement. In 2000, Dad and Mom moved to Sault Ste. Marie, ON to be close to family and grandchildren, their pride and joy. As people of great faith, they attended Central United Church where new friendships were created.

Dad became one of the earliest employees of CBYT Corner Brook, CBC’s first full radio and TV operation in the province, joining the staff in 1960. He worked as an announcer-operator, hosting various radio programs, the midday television news, and interviewing many well-known local, national, and international celebrities. He is probably best-remembered for his work at the weather board on the suppertime “Here and Now” program until his retirement in 1985. Dad was active in Corner Brook as long-time media chair of the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal, as a volunteer and prolific donor with the Red Cross blood program, and as an active member of First United Church and the Masonic Lodge. Dad also loved music and singing and would spend hours on end listening to a wide range of artists, forever instilling this love of music in us. Both Carol and Alison inherited their musical abilities from Dad, particularly Carol’s wonderful piano playing and Alison’s beautiful singing voice.

Dad’s 92 years were wholeheartedly filled with love, laughter, and long-lasting friendships. We will forever remember him reading to us, giving us pony rides, letting us put ‘kiss curls’ in his hair with Mom’s bobby pins, bringing us to the CBC to watch Bugs Bunny on the colour monitors, skating with us at Humber Gardens, and tobogganing with us on the golf course across from the Armoury. He held us during our hurts and our joys. He loved his BBQ, and to have a scotch while at the BBQ (Carol learned from Dad how to BBQ perfectly, but prefers a rum and Coke), time at the cabin (something Alison loved just as much), and the joy of life. He taught us how to laugh, how to cry, and how to love truly and deeply. We were and are so lucky.

Dad is survived by his daughters Carol Hickmann (Peter) of Edmonton, AB and Alison Warner-Smith (James) of Sudbury, ON; four grandchildren Jacqueline, Christopher, Jennifer (Tim), and Elizabeth (Sean); and five great-grandchildren Christian, Edward, William, Abigail, and Quinton.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 1 pm at Central United Church, Sault Ste. Marie, ON. Reception to follow. Flowers gratefully declined. If you wish to make a donation in Dad’s name, please consider Central United Church (160 Spring St., Sault Ste. Marie, ON, P6A 3A5) or First United Church (19 Park St., Corner Brook, NL, A2H 2W8) to support the important work they do in their communities. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario P6B 0B6, 705-945-7758). www.northwoodfuneral.com.

Dad - we love you forever and will miss you for always ... Carol and Alison.
