Dorothy Evelyn Sweet

Dorothy Evelyn Sweet

Sweet, Dorothy Evelyn - 83, Bedford, NS, formerly of Collingwood Corner, NS, passed away peacefully at her home at Ivany Place on Sunday, April 15, 2018. Born in Springhill, NS, she was the daughter of the late Bradford and Minerva (Read) Ripley.
Dorothy was a life-long member of the United Church Women with which she served faithfully at Stairs Memorial United Church in Dartmouth and Collingwood United Church. Service and friendship were Dorothy’s cornerstones. She was a member of the Y’s Menettes in Amherst and New Glasgow. Dorothy loved her church communities and offered her singing gifts in church choirs. She knew everyone. And the names of their kids and pets and even their birthdays. Life events, no matter how big or small, or who was marking them, were important for Dorothy. She cherished her friendships, and easily made new ones.
Dorothy had many health challenges over the years, but they didn’t diminish her spirit. She had tremendous strength and acceptance of her circumstances and faced each one with grace.
She is survived by her husband of over 54 years, Brian; children, Natalie Moyes (Ian), Middle Sackville, NS and Gordon Sweet (Dr. Maureen Nolan), Halifax; her 4 grandchildren Gordon and David Moyes, Gina Sweet and Julie Nolan-McCarthy; brother Wentzel Ripley (Joan), Amherst, and sisters Cheryl Mollins (Dwight), Moncton and Raelene Skaling, Amherst. She will be fondly missed by her second family, the staff, residents, and volunteers of Northwood’s Ivany Place in Bedford. We are truly grateful for the loving care they provided mom, and the rest of us. Dorothy was predeceased by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins from her large extended family.
Visitation will be held from noon-1pm on Monday, April 23 in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church Street, Amherst, NS (902-667-9906). Funeral service will take place immediately following at 1pm in Campbell’s chapel. Interment in Collingwood Wyvern Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to the Arthritis Society or Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice. Online condolences can be forwarded to the family online by visiting www.campbellsamherst.ca or by visiting Campbell’s Funeral Home Facebook page.
