It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, Mary Margaret MacPhee, age 77, on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in North Sydney, on December 5, 1940, Mary was the daughter of the late George and Helen Grace (Bona) Jardine.
In her earlier years she worked at St. Elizabeth Hospital, and later with Canadian Tire in the warehouse until her retirement. Mary’s main focus in life was spending time with her family. She loved cooking, baking and gardening. Mary had a love for fiddle music and she was an avid step dancer. Mary was known for her famous shortbread cookies that family and neighbors got to enjoy every Christmas. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Gannon Road and recently a member St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
She is survived by her children, her sons, William (Becky) MacPhee, New Glasgow, Liam (Sheryl) MacPhee, Halifax, Michael MacPhee, at home; her daughter, Denise MacPhee, North Sydney; her seven grandchildren, Tara Lee, Shane, Christopher, Danielle, Kaitlin, Cole and Ryan, her two great-grandchildren, Isaac and Toryn. Also surviving are her sisters, Valerie (Jack) Bona, North Sydney, Gracie Jardine (Steve), St. Peter’s; her brothers, Jack (Marjorie) Jardine, Georges River, Robert (Lynn) Jardine, Orangedale and by a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, William MacPhee in 2004.
A special thank you to Dr. Andrew Wawer and the nursing staff on 4 West at the Northside General Hospital for their exceptional care given to our mother. A very special thank you to Jackie MacDonald, Ruth Ivey and Lynn Yetman for their exceptional care, kindness, compassion in helping us to keep our mother at home. We would also like to thank the staff of the Northside Homemakers Service Society for their care and George Mullins for providing weekly communion.
Visitation for Mary will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, May 6th in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Monday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or the Northside Harbourview Hospital Foundation, Palliative Care 4 West.
