With broken hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Ethel Mae DeMarco, on Friday, May 4, 2018 at the Northside General Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Bras d’Or on April 7, 1931 she was the daughter of the late Bob and Sophie Slade, and Step Mother Ethel.
In her early years Ethel Mae, stayed at home to raise her family. Family was very important to her; their home was always filled with children. Ethel Mae was affectionately known as Mom to many children who were not her own, and later in life she was known to many as Nanny ‘Et”. After her children were grown, Ethel Mae went to work at National Sea Fish Plant, where she made many great friends. She had many other passions in life which included baking, cooking, gardening, reading and sewing. Ethel Mae loved to cook and bake so much that her family and friends often referred to her as “Meals on Wheels”. She and Carmen shared 68 wonderful years of marriage, they enjoyed going for “ice cream” drives and shared a special kiss every time they met, right up until her final days.
Ethel Mae is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Carmen Francis DeMarco; children, Carmelita (Brian MacLeod), Marie (Bernie MacCuish), Brenda (Lou Marinelli), Greg (Roberta), John (Manon), Rayfield (Valerie); grandchildren, Carmen, Theresa, Billy, Bernie Jr., Nicki, Jeff, Ryan, Tammy, Belinda, Shane, Brad, Vicki, Jillian Mae, Jeff, Nicholas, Joey, Marie, Ray Anne, Mary Christle, Adam, Nicole, Brenda, Candise, Chris, Lee and Garret; several great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandchild; brothers, Elige Slade (Fran), Sheldon Slade (Sheila); sisters, Bernice Devoe and Carolyn Farrell.
Besides her parents, Ethel Mae was predeceased by sons, Stan, Georgie, Russie and baby, Ruby at birth; brothers, George Slade (Marg), Ray Slade ( Beatrice), Major, Lawrence; sisters, Molly, Marg (Harry Eakhart), Florence (Lawrence Stephenson), Ruby (Frankie MacDougall), Emmaline (Donnie Le Roy); brothers-in-law, Tony DeMarco, Russie DeMarco, John Farrell; sisters-in-law, Rose (Bob Clark) Lena (Pat Kockocki), Mary DeMarco, Cecelia ( Stan Jockomack); grandchildren, Dion DeMarco, Téa McCuish Reddick
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Dr. Doug Kholsmith for his kindness and compassion, the nurses on 4w at the Northside General Hospital and all the staff at the Miner’s Memorial Manor.
There will be no Visitation. A celebration of Ethel Mae’s life will take place Monday, May 7, 2018 at 11 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. James Oliver officiating.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Miner’s Memorial Manor Bus fund, Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of one’s choice.
