It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Sarah Marie ‘Sadie’ MacKenzie (MacNeil), announce her passing after a brief but courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, May 13, 2018 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born January 9, 1943 in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Hector and Anna (MacNeil) MacNeil.
She spent all of the formative years in Iona but her work as a Nanny took her to places such as Boston, Sydney Mines and River Denys where she created many happy memories. She worked on the Janitorial staff of Cape Breton/Victoria School Board’s Iona School until 2012 when she retired to become a full-time caregiver for her husband Michael. She also volunteered her time at St. Barra Parish and the Christmas Island Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Sadie is survived by her husband, best friend and soulmate of 48 years, Michael. She was a loving mother to Sarahlee (late Phil), Perth Andover, NB, Kim (Glenn), Queensville, Bonnie, Oromocto, NB and Kenneth, at home. She was an amazing grandma who adored her five grandchildren and could often be heard bragging about their accomplishments, Bryden and Kayden Swazey and Olivia, Emmett and Sophia MacIver adored her in return. She will be missed by her brothers, Jimmy, Wasabuck and John Hector (Juanita), Mabou; sister, Josie, Iona; brothers-in-law, Arnold MacNeil, South Haven, Fr. Archie MacKenzie, Alberta, and sister-in-law, Carmel Lefrancois, Ontario. She is also survived by her uncle, Malcolm MacNeil, Sydney; numerous nieces, nephews, and godchildren, Josie Malcolm, Alberta, Gerard MacNeil, Port Hawkesbury and Jen MacNeil, New Glasgow.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by sisters, Kaye and Sissy; brother, George; niece/godchild, Kerri Lynn MacKenzie; sisters-in-law, Gerry, Theresa and Norma; brothers-in-law, Richard, Roddie, Basil, Verne and Raymond.
Visitation for Sadie MacKenzie will be on Thursday, May 17 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at St. Columba Church Hall, Iona. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 18 at 11 a.m. at St. Columba Church, Iona with Fr. Everett MacDow officiating. Interment in St. Barra Cemetery, Christmas Island.
