It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert “Bob” Russell Phillips age 78, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at the Northside General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Whitney Pier, May 25, 1940, Bob was the son of the late Cecil and Margaret (Phillips) Phillips.
He began working as a printer 61 years ago with Herald Stationers and later established a family business, “Northside Printers” which he operated for the past 52 years, and is one of the oldest businesses on the Northside. His son Peter has worked beside him in the business for the past 27 years. He was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney and a longtime member of the Men’s Club of the church.
Bob was devoted to his wife and children, his business and his beloved farmhouse in Boularderie where he loved to relax with the beauty surrounding him. He loved classical music and had his own organ and played it frequently. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor “Ellen” Vokey; his children, Mike (Karen) Packer, Winnipeg, Bob (Dianne) Phillips, Whitby, Michelle (Adam) MacLean, Millville, Carey (Becky) Phillips, North Sydney, Peter (Debbie) Phillips, Boularderie Cente; his 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean (Eddie) Gillis, Sydney; brothers-in-law, Dave (Johanne) Vokey, Tom Vokey, Rev. David (Nancy) MacNaughton, Sam (Olive) Vokey; nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his two step-children, Eric (Cathy) Richards, Halifax, Kathy Richards, Kitchener and his six step-grandchildren.
Besides his parents Bob was predeceased by his brothers, Eddie and Gary Phillips and step-son, Gerald “Gerry” Richards.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Northside Harbourview Hospital Foundation or Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
