With great sadness, we announce the sudden passing of Kevin Michael MacKenzie, 55, on Monday, June 4, 2018 at the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. Born on October 28, 1962, Kevin was the eldest son of the late Aubrey and Shirley (Weatherby) MacKenzie.
Kevin, who was known to everyone as ‘Gravy’, had an immense group of friends and always enjoyed time spent with them. Kevin was a graduate of St. Michael's Senior High School and, in his younger years, worked for Irving Oil Limited as a fuel delivery driver and as manager of several company-owned service stations. Kevin had been employed with the Cape Breton Regional Municipality for over 25 years and, at the time of his passing, was employed with the Street Department in Glace Bay.
Kevin lived for his Thursday night card games with the boys and his Saturday nights with the Shamrock crew. He loved his '88 Mustang, snowmobiling, watching the races, and spending time with his buddies in the garage.
Kevin is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Michalik, and his stepchildren, Krista (Brad), Stephanie (Brendan), Kenneth (Amanda) and Connor (Lauren); Neil, Colin, Cadence, Jeremy and Maddie will also miss their ‘Poppa Kev’. He is also survived by his special canine buddy, Hunter MacKenzie. Also left to mourn are his brother, Darren (Andrea), Ontario, and their daughter, Jenna (Zach), Sydney; as well as members of the Weatherby and MacKenzie families. Kevin will also be remembered by his two special godsons, Shawn MacLean and Brody O'Handley.
At Kevin's request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, June 8, 2018 at TJ Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment to follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, NS.
