Doris Irene Collier, b. April 6, 1923, d. July 6, 2018. Passed peacefully surrounded by family at King’s County Memorial Hospital, in Montague, P.E.I. Daughter of William Duncan King, from Barbados, and Irene Carkett, from Plymouth, England. Survived by her sons: Leonard and wife Martha, and their boys Leverett, Max, and Sam, of Toronto; Ronald and wife Nancy and their children, Joey, Rachel, and Owen, of Murray Harbour North; and her nieces, Marilyn, Janet, Gail, Carolyn, Nancy, Linda, and Donna. Predeceased by her husband, Arthur E. Collier, brothers George and Leonard King, and sister Gladys MacPherson. She was born, raised, and remained proud of her roots in Dartmouth. She had many fond memories of the old North End: living on the tracks in Tufts Cove, Windmill Road, and family excursions in a borrowed car to Clam Harbour Beach. She had vivid stories of the War Years, the VE Day Riots, and the Bedford Magazine explosion. She was a member of the Dartmouth Girl Guides Association as a girl and as an adult volunteer. She was a charter member of the Dartmouth Trefoil Guild. She raised her boys to be capable Boy Scouts, teaching them about the constellations, camping, and how to build a fire in any weather. An early example of an independent woman, she was employed by the Department of National Defence from 1944-1958, leaving to raise her family. She was based at the Naval Armament Depot in Dartmouth and the Naval Ammunition Magazine in Bedford, where she met her future husband, whom she married in 1955. She returned to the work force in 1970, and was employed as Secretary at Northbrook Elementary School, retiring in 1984, when her boys had finished school and could stand on their own two feet as men, one a lawyer in Toronto, the other an officer in the Coast Guard. After Art passed in 1986, she remained at the little house at 82 Russell Street, surrounded by long-time friends, until moving to Montague in 2012 to be close to her family. Cremation has taken place. A family service was held in Montague. A memorial service will be scheduled in Dartmouth in early August.
