September 4, 1965 – September 11, 2018
Steven Dornan, 53, of Kingston, Nova Scotia, passed peacefully in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, September 11th, 2018. Steve is survived by his wife Rosanne of 30 years, daughter Cecilia, sons Patrick and Sean, father Edward, brother Andrew, sister Laura, grandchild Eleanor and loving nieces and nephews. Steve was a loving father, husband, grandpa, uncle, friend, and leader within the community. Steve spent a 27 year career in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as an Airborne Electronic Sensory Operator (AESOP), deploying all over the world including several tours to both Bosnia and Afghanistan. During his career, he was presented with the prestigious Chief of Defence Staff Commendation, as well as many other medals and awards for his dedication to Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces. Steve joined the Kingston Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) in 2001, serving as an active duty firefighter with the department for 17 years, rising to the rank of 1st Captain. In 2018, he was awarded Firefighter of the Year by the members of the Department, recognizing his outstanding leadership and dedication to the fire service and the Province of Nova Scotia. His passions outside of his career in the military and fire service included a love of carpentry and woodworking, his motorcycle, and travelling with his wife and family. He spent much of his time renovating homes over the years as well as riding around Nova Scotia with his wife. While he had travelled extensively during his career, his favourite places included Bermuda, Scotland, and the Northwest Territories. Steve was always a cornerstone to his family; offering guidance, support, and giving us the perseverance to become better people. Throughout his life, his indomitable spirit, sense of humor, and bravery offered strength during times of adversity, encouragement to enjoy life to its fullest, and provided a sense of hope for the future. He was an inspiration in life, and a truly genuine person to all who had the opportunity to meet him. Wherever you are, know that you are loved and will always be remembered as our hero. We would like to extend special thank you to all of the nurses, doctors and support staff, notably at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton, NS, for their loving care and support during his final days. There will be a Celebration of his Life held at the Kingston & District Fire Hall (570 Sparky St, Kingston, NS) on Friday, the 21st of September 2018; the Celebration will begin at 6pm, with a ceremony at 6:30pm, followed by light snacks and drinks for the rest of the evening. As per his wishes, friends and family are requested to dress comfortably for a joyous occasion to remember a great man and his legacy. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., 902-825-3448. Online guestbook may be signed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
