Elizabeth Mae “Betty” (MacCallum) Rath-Chambers

Elizabeth Mae “Betty” (MacCallum) Rath-Chambers

Elizabeth Mae “Betty” Rath-Chambers (MacCallum) – 89, Truro. It is with very heavy hearts that we must announce Betty’s passing on Friday evening, October 5, 2018, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, with her loving family present. Born in Mission, British Columbia, she was a daughter of the late George and Ella (Davidson) MacCallum. As a young child, Betty and her family moved to Hilden and then she lived most of her life on beautiful Harmony Ridge, however, has lived in Truro for the past 12 years. Betty was a devoted and loving mother to Gerald Rath (Patricia), Vernon, British Columbia; Caren Rath-Langille (Michael), Truro; Thomas Rath (Simonne), Caribou River; Roger Rath (Patricia), Stewiacke; Carol Murray (Floyd), Harmony. She was very proud of her family and was known as “Grammie or Gram” to her 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Leaving also to grieve deeply as their circle is now broken are her dear sisters, Jean Armsworthy, Hilden; Pearl Rushton, St. Catharines, Ontario; Shirley Morrisey (Earl), Hilden; baby brother, Kenneth (Charlene), Hilden; brother and sister-in-law, Lawrence and Winnie Finnie, Garden Hill, Ontario; brother-in-law, Morris Rath, Colburne, Ontario; many, many nieces and nephews. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband of 47 years, Francis Dawson Rath; second husband, Charles Chambers who passed away unexpectedly after only one year. After all of her children went off to school, Betty began her working career at Snook’s Save Easy as a cashier and then supervisor; many will remember her bright smile, personality plus and hard work ethic. Faith was very important to Betty and she loved her church, McCulloch United Church in Harmony, where she attended for over 70 years. She enjoyed preparing for holidays and family get-togethers and she would spend hours baking and cooking and ensuring that everything was “just right”; her generosity spilled over to friends in her apartment building who would often open their door to see Betty with a fresh loaf of bread or an invitation to join her and her family for a meal. She enjoyed the little things in life and didn’t take anything for granted; she cherished time spent with her dear friend and ever present side kick, Vera “Peg” Lynds and was always up for a drive to Tim Hortons or even driving all the way to Florida with her daughter, Carol, and she drove right up until the day before her death. We will miss her infectious laugh and smile that would light up a room. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where the funeral service was held Wednesday, October 10, 2018, Reverend Iain Macdonald officiated. Private family interment was in Harmony Cemetery. If so desired, donations in Betty’s memory to McCulloch United Church, War Amps or a charity of choice are welcomed. Private messages of condolence may be sent to the family by viewing Betty’s obituary on-line and selecting “Send A Condolence” at: www.mattatallvarnerfh.com
