Helyn Manos

Well-Known Businesswoman Passes Away
Helyn Manos, age 90, of New Glasgow, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2018, in the Aberdeen Hospital. Born in Montreal, she was a daughter of the late Nicholas and Katina (Gerulakos) Manos. She moved to New Glasgow when she was 3 years old and learned to speak English when she first attended school. Helyn was co-owner of the London Fruit and Candy Store for many years, starting at a very young age helping at the store after school. Her brother, Peter, and sisters, Angelina and Mary, were also involved in their father’s business until their retirement. Her favorite labor of love was the business, especially Christmas, Easter and Valentine’s Day. She was noted for the beautiful gift baskets filled with imported fruit of the best quality, imported tins of candy, chocolate and biscuits from Switzerland, Belgium, France and England that she made on these special occasions, as well as for Thanksgiving and birthdays. She took great pride in the store showcases which were filled with nuts, candies, delicious chocolates, homemade Easter bunnies, ribbon and toy candy, sponge toffee, pink and white toffee and the fruit displayed in the front windows. At the soda fountain, she served delicious milkshakes, sodas, sundaes, banana splits and so much more. Her many customers became good friends and were like family to her and her brother, sisters and father, creating many happy memories for all the Manos family. Helyn was a member of Saint Georges Anglican Church from an early age and regularly attended Sunday services. She was a member of the Abercrombie Golf Club which she enjoyed with her long-time friend and other friends she met there. She spent and enjoyed days off and summer with family and close relatives at the cottage in King’s Head. She is survived by sisters: Angelina and Mary, New Glasgow; brothers: George (Shirley), New Glasgow; James Dimitri “Jimmy”, Halifax; many favorite nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her older brother, Samuel, and dear brother, Peter. Visitation 6-8 pm Tuesday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. A private service will be held with burial in Lorne Street Cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of choice.
