It is with saddened hearts that we, the family, announce the peaceful passing of Simon Francis McLean, age 79, on December 7, 2018 at the Glace Bay Hospital, Glace Bay surrounded by his loving family. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Hector and Jennie (MacDonald) McLean.
He will be remembered for his dry and sarcastic loving demeanor. Simon served his country for 29 years. He was very honoured to travel the country from east to west and represent Canada in Germany, Egypt and France. Simon retired from the Canadian military in 1988. He went on to work for Canadian Corp of Commissioners where he served the majority of his time at the Sydney Airport. He was a member of the Gardiner Mines Pensioners Club. Simon was an avid Blue Jays and Maple Leafs fan and enjoyed curling.
Simon was a very proud husband to Martha (Gillis) McLean; proud and amazing father and grandpa to his children, Michael McLean (Pam), Angela Steeves (Tim), and Brenda McSween (Stephen); grandchildren, Riley, Matthew, Amanda, Brennan, Christopher, Sara, Bruce, Kerry, Malcolm, Fergus and Simon; great-grandchildren, Kristen, Mark and Eva Joe. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert McLean, Glace Bay, Wayne (Colleen) McLean, Reserve Mines; sister, Margaret Penny; uncle, Simon McLean (Norma); aunt, Audrey McNeil (Gerard) and aunt Lorraine MacKinnon, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Sarah, and a brother, Michael in infancy.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 11, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at T.J. Tracey Cremation and Burial Specialists, 370 Reserve St., Glace Bay, NS (902-849-4199).
A Memorial Mass will take place 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Church, Main Street, Reserve Mines with Father Daniel Boudreau presiding.
Donations may be sent to the Kidney Foundation or a charity of choice.
The family would like to thank the Dialysis Unit for the many years of care and compassion, thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Glace Bay Hospital, and a special thank you to Dr. James MacLean for all that he did for Simon.
