A special loss was felt on December 3, 2018. Josepha Euphemia McEachern (“Jo”), 87 died peacefully and comfortably in Sydney, NS. Thanks to the kind care of the CBRH Palliative Care Unit.
Jo was born on December 28, 1930 in Glace Bay, NS. Jo knew what mattered in life and she lived her principles. She believed in being kind and inclusive and she gave her time and help freely. She was surrounded by many of her heartbroken friends during her last days. Jo cultivated an extended family of lifelong friends who recognized the wonder in Jo. Her family is eternally grateful to their loving care. Jo’s intelligence and wit were on display daily during her years as a Language Arts and English as a Second Language teacher. She taught a generation to e-nun-ci-ate. Jo believed that love was an active verb, not just a feeling. Her daughter, Rebecca Rose McEachern, always felt safe knowing that “wherever Mommy is” was home. Jo’s courage as a single mother and her refusal to be limited by any obstacles gave Rebecca and Steve Mooney, Jo’s beloved son-in law, the confidence to welcome her granddaughters, Alexis (14), Julianna (10) and Mariah (8) Mooney in 2015. Jo’s love of Cape Breton, NS brought her “home” every working summer of her life to enjoy friendship, family, music and the majestic views from the A-Frame. Her retirement was frequently spent with her sisters, Chris (Mary Christena McEachern, d. 2014), Sally (Sara Beaton) and Kay (Catherine Ann McEachern, d. 2012) and they were delighted when their brother, Donald McEachern (d. 2013) joined them. She filled the A-Frame with laughter and friends and, on rainy days, fudge (with lots of nuts). Jo’s constant companions were her dogs and cats whom she considered family.
Alzheimer’s tried to dim her light, but Jo was Jo until her last breath. Jo’s specialness was evident to all who knew her. She believed in calling “a spade, a spade” and insisted on “finishing what you start”. She was a remarkable woman who may be “dead and gone” but who will never be forgotten.
Honor Jo’s memory by enjoying a good story whilst eating great cheese and listening to heartbreakingly beautiful music. Give of yourself. Laugh hard. Enjoy healthy debates and intelligent conversation. Be kind. Love actively. Teach well. See obstacles as solvable problems. And most importantly, don’t ever be trite.
If you are moved to donate in Jo’s memory, please consider supporting the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. (hospicesociety@nshealth.ca)
Cremation has taken place with the care and guidance of Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main Street, Glace Bay, NS.

Funeral services and a celebration of Jo’s life will be held in the summer of 2019 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Details will be posted closer to the event.
