It is with broken hearts and cherished memories that we, the family, announce the passing of Theresa Barrie, age 91, our much loved and treasured mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt on Tuesday, January 15, 2019, at the Miner’s Memorial Manor, Sydney Mines.
Mom was born on May 15, 1927 in Sydney Mines to her loving parents John Clement and Mary (McQuaid) McKenna. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mom was a woman of incredible love and profound faith in God, which saw her through many of life’s challenges. Mom supported everyone with faith, love and kindness. She was deeply loved and respected by those who knew her.
In 1955 Mom became a founding member of the Catholic Women’s League at the former St. Pius X Parish. Over the course of 60 years she held several leadership roles with the CWL. Mom was devoted to serving and was most proud to receive the coveted Maple Leaf Pin, which is presented to those who have served the league in an exceptional manner.
One of Mom’s many joys in life was spending as much time as possible with her family and friends. She was always the life of the party and had a great sense of humor. With her beloved husband Gerald by her side she would host family and friends at the cabin in Beaver Cove for a meal and card game. You could never leave Mom’s without some homemade sweets and a nice cup of tea.
Left to mourn are Mom’s three children, Brian (Cecily), Halifax, Madonna (Bud) Huntley, North Sydney, and Maureen (Reza) Khierdoost, Halifax. She was so very proud of and will forever be remembered by her three grandchildren, Jennifer (Lloyd) Hall, Stephen (Trisha) Huntley and Laurie (Geoff) Jay. Mom loved her entire family unconditionally, but Nanny B would have a beaming smile when she saw her four great-grandchildren, who she called her Angels, Kailee and Mallory Hall and Tyler and Brendan Jay; her love for them was endless.
Mom was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, our father, Gerald and twin sons, Joseph and Malcom, who died in infancy. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her siblings, Ann Bernadine, Mary, Peter, Frank, Stella MacDonald and Annie May Higgins.
Special thanks to Mom’s nieces, Carol Vickers and Mary Louise Higgins. Your visits were always treasured by Mom. The endless love and support you have shown has meant so much, and your unwavering presence and strength has been a Godsend, especially to Madonna.
Thank you to Dr. Doug Kohlsmith and the entire staff at Miner’s Memorial Manor. Mom has spent the last 5 years with the most loving, compassionate, caring and professional staff, whom she truly loved. Every one of you could put a smile on Mom’s face, no matter how she was feeling. Mom affectionately referred to you all as her Angels and you truly are Angels on Earth. We would not have been able to get through this without all of you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Church on Thursday, January 17, 2019, at 2 p.m. with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. A reception will be held in the parish hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Theresa’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, Holy Family Parish, Miner’s Memorial Manor or another charity of one’s choice.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
