Garfield Fizzard passed away peacefully at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home in St. John’s, NL, on Thursday, January 17th, at the age of 85 years. Born at Anderson’s Cove in Long Harbour, Fortune Bay, Garfield moved to Grand Bank with his mother at a young age. He became a teacher and taught at Grand Bruit, St. Lunaire, and Grand Bank but ultimately became a professor of Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland for several decades. As well, Garfield was a writer and researcher with a particular passion for the history of Newfoundland. His publications include Unto the Sea: A History of Grand Bank and Master of his Craft: Captain Frank Thornhill. Garfield was also a dedicated member of Gower Street United Church, serving for a time as Chair of its Board. Predeceased by parents George M. Fizzard and Priscilla (Thornhill) Fizzard, sisters Hannah Piercy, Georgina Stronach, and Marjorie Fizzard, brothers Gordon Fizzard and Chesley Fizzard. Leaving to celebrate his life: wife of 57 years, Elva (Blake) Fizzard, daughters Anne Fizzard and Allison Fizzard (Brian Herman), son Blake Fizzard (Cynthia née Hartery), cherished grandchildren Molly, John and Maxwell Fizzard, nieces and nephews and their families, and a wide circle of friends. Visitation will be held at Carnell’s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road on Sunday, January 20th, from 2-4 p.m. Funeral Service at Gower Street United Church on Monday, January 21st at 1 p.m. with inurnment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
