Florence Mary Kelly (Rooney)

Florence Mary Kelly (Rooney)

With heavy hearts, we the children, regret to announce the peaceful passing of Florence Mary Kelly (Rooney), 91, of Glace Bay, on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, in Halifax.
Mom had moved to Halifax and resided for the last seven years at Northwood Manor.
She was born on January 2, 1928, in Glace Bay. She was the daughter of John Gaston Rooney and Lauretta (Merlin).
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
As well as her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ted in 1988; brothers, Ottie (Bella), Art (Mary), Charles (Beatrice), Johnny (Mamie), and Danny (Lil).
Mom attended St. Anne’s School and married Edward “Ted” Kelly of Reserve Mines in 1947.
She was a gifted cook and baker and had a huge following for her delicious “pork pies”.
Mom loved to work with her hands - sewing, knitting and numerous quilts were enjoyed by her family and friends. In fact, she was a founding member of the “Mayflower Quilters”, Sydney branch, after being a Halifax member.
Mom had a great sense of humor and enjoyed a good laugh but her greatest joy was her family and our various endeavors. She was active in church events as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Anne’s Church. Mom enjoyed any event at the Savoy, Christmas, cross country skiing, summer days at Jean's pool with the neighbors and card games with her card club.
Mom is survived by her nine loving children, Brian (Cabrini) Halifax, Dr. Colleen Lapierre (Wayne) Sydney, Paula (Brent) Starke, Vernon, BC, Emmitt (Karen) Halifax, Dennis (Rhonda) Edmonton, Johnny (Joane) Ottawa, Marilyn (Brian) Dartmouth, Colin, Ottawa, and Rosemary, Ottawa.
She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jarrod Lapierre, Leanne Starke, Lisa Starke, Michael Kelly, Jonathan Kelly, Connor MacDonald, Lauren MacDonald, and Paige MacDonald; as well as five great-grandchildren, Cameron, Caiden, Brooke, Reid, and Benjamin. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Helen “Toot” Leclair, Dartmouth.
We would like to thank 3rd and 4th floor, nursing and support staff of the Manor for their exceptional care of our mother during her stay at Northwood, Halifax Campus.
Visitation will be held at Curry’s Funeral Home 775 Main St., Glace Bay, Sunday, February 10th, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, February 11th, 10 a.m. at St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee presiding.
Donations in Florence’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society.
Online condolences to the Kelly family are available at http://www.currysfuneralhome.com.
