Mentis, Burton Hugh – 76, Truro, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Known as Burtie to loved ones and friends, he was born and raised in Truro to the late John “Bob” and Viola (Parsons) Mentis. During his early years, Burton played and excelled in the sport of baseball. In 1962, he was a member of the Vaughan Furriers Baseball Team who went on to become the Nova Scotia Junior Champions. In 2009, Burton along with his Vaughan Furriers teammates, were recognized at Government House by the then Lieutenant Governor, Mayann Francis, for their commitment to excellence in the sport of baseball. In 2016 he and his teammates were inducted into the Maritime Sport Hall of Fame. Prior to retirement, Burton worked as a Supervisor and Union President at Nystone Chemicals in Debert, N.S. Burton faithfully served as a brotherhood and choir member of the Zion United Baptist Church for over 34 years. For those who knew Burton knew that he could be found spending his Sunday mornings praising his Lord and Saviour and his Sunday afternoons carrying out his favorite past time of “feeding” the horses at the Truro Raceway. Burton is survived by his four daughters, Denise (Thane), Roberta (Jason), Lisa and Wendy; grandchildren, Chad, Denzel, Katelyn, JJ, Chanel, Keenan, Brianna and Chloe; great-grandson, Greyson; brothers, Raymond and John; special sister, Brenda; goddaughter, Michelle; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Ruth; brother, Robert “Cook”; sister, Lenora “Sissy” and son-in-law, Albert. Family flowers only. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a celebration of Burton’s life on Saturday, February 16 at 11 a.m. both in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. Pastor Brian O. Johnston officiating. A repast will follow the service. Interment will take place at a later date.
