HUNTLEY, Helen Joyce of Berwick, Kings Co., passed away peacefully at the age of 89 years in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville on Saturday, February 9, 2019. Born in Avonport, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Mary “Bessie” (Holmes) MacDonald. She came to Berwick as a young teenager keeping house for the Thomas family. It was at this time she met her future husband. She then worked at Evangeline Beach and soon married. They built their home in Berwick and raised their five children. In her early years she worked at the Red and White Store in Berwick and then later in the dietary department at Western Kings Memorial Hospital. Over the years she enjoyed curling, bingo, playing cards and summers spent at the family cottage. She was an avid knitter and will be remembered for many baby sweater sets, prams, and many Christmas stockings made special with the names of children including all her own children, their spouses and her grandchildren. She was a member of the Berwick United Church and life member of the United Church Women having served as chairperson for the music committee and also served as an Explorer and CGIT leader. She worked faithfully for the church for many years at turkey dinners, teas and sales, and prepared bags of candies for Sunday School Christmas celebrations. She was recognized by the Nova Scotia Government and the Town of Berwick by receiving the 2005 Berwick Volunteer of the Year for her dedication of 23 years to the Central Kings Crusaders, the Seniors’ Centre, Meals on Wheels, Junior Firefighters and Kids Fit Program. She had a special interest in supporting children in the Dreams Take Flight program. She is survived by her five loving children, Yvonne (Terry) Graves, Willis, Alden (Debby), Janet (David Chase) Eisnor, and Edith (Oran) Crocker; sisters, Lois Schofield and Roxie (Russell) Redden; also nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren: and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul W. Huntley; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Huntley; brothers, William and Clarence; sisters, Laura Hutt, Elizabeth McBay, Shirley Burgess, Doris Lawrence, Ida Hirtle, Jean Sanford, Margaret Workman, and Mary Mac Donald in infancy. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation, by request. A memorial Service, followed by a reception took place at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 14th at the Berwick United Church, 240 Commercial St., Berwick. Rev. Tom Woods officiated, assisted by Rev. Ivan Norton, with interment in Berwick Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to one’s charity of choice.
