Albert MacCALLUM

Albert MacCALLUM

MacCALLUM, W. Albert
Lyons Brook / Pictou Island

It is with heavy hearts the MacCallum family announces the passing of Albert MacCallum. Albert passed away on February 17, 2019 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. He was born January 17, 1941 on Pictou Island and spent most of his 78 years of life dedicated to the ocean. Albert fished lobster on the Northumberland Strait for 62 years before finally retiring in 2016. During his many years on the ocean he fished alongside his father, brother, nephews and niece, and was well respected within the fishing community. In 1963 he received his pilot licence, which was one of his many passions. Albert spent many years volunteering with the Northumberland Fisheries Museum where he built wooden lobster traps for visiting tourists and school groups. One of his fondest memories was in 2007 when he was the Grand Marshal for the Pictou Lobster Carnival. Albert was surrounded by wonderful friendships. He often spent his evenings at the Highland Square mall where he created many memorable bonds. Albert’s favourite thing above all was spending time with his family, specifically his nieces and nephews. His family was his pride and joy and he loved any opportunity he had to get them all together, whether it be days out fishing, afternoons playing cards, or times where his nieces and nephews gathered to play baseball in his yard. Albert is survived by his sister, Elizabeth “Libby” Crowe; brothers, Martin (Irene) and and Bradley (Mary) MacCallum. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Jane (Eric), Hal (Tammy), Sarah, Kathleen, Austin, Dylan, Kaitlyn, Jesse, Olivia, and Grace. Albert was predeceased by his parents, Duncan & Janie (Ferguson) MacCallum; sister, Elda; and brother-in-law, Robert Crowe. The family would like to thank all those who made Albert’s last few weeks joy-filled with care packages, visits, and love. Visiting hours for Albert will be held 2-4 and 7-9 PM Thursday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. The service will be held at 2 PM Friday from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou. A reception will follow in the church hall. Family flowers only please. Donations in his memory may be made to the Northumberland Fisheries Museum, or VON Canada.
