James (Glendon) MacKendrick

James (Glendon) MacKendrick

It is with great sadness that the family of James (Glendon) MacKendrick, age 84, announce his passing on February 23, 2019 at Community Hospital, O’Leary, PEI. Glendon was born on July 23, 1934 to the late Kenneth and Margaret (Smallman) MacKendrick in Campbellton, PEI. As an only child he thrived on the attention of his parents and grandparents, while growing up in a small, close knit community setting. Campbellton was always an integral part of his life, as it was the centre for his education while he attended the local one room schoolhouse, the focus of many gatherings of young people in the community, and the location of the family farm where he worked and learned the business of farming. Dad took great pleasure in the life of a farmer; he loved working with animals and the challenge of improving his herd of Holsteins. Visitors to the farm would often make note of his remarkable memory for the pedigree of each and every cow and calf on the farm. Dad’s remarkable memory also extended to dates, but none was more important to him than June 10, 1957; this was the first date for Elaine Shaw and Glendon MacKendrick, and it was a date that would be celebrated for many years to come. Whether it was simply going out for a cone of ice cream after the daily chores were finished or seizing the opportunity for a weekend getaway, June 10th was always a highlight, since it ultimately led to July 2nd, 1960, the day Mom and Dad were married. Our father was a quiet man who enjoyed spending time with Mom and family; he was also a voracious reader who appreciated the chance to enjoy a good book or a favorite magazine, and he relished his Sunday naps, his brief reprieve from a week of hard work. Additionally, he enjoyed discussing politics and current events, a family trait, with anyone who expressed an interest. Glendon’s passing will be grieved by his wife and life partner of 58 years, Elaine; daughter, Cindy and her husband Mario Fiset; son Bill and his wife Geri; step grandchildren Jill (George) and Tim (Allana); step great-children Ben and Will Harris; brothers and sisters-in-law Fenton (Hazel) Shaw, Jean Shaw, and Allan (Wendy) Shaw. He will also be missed by numerous cousins and nieces and nephews. Glendon was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Ruth, and his brother in law, Wendell Shaw. The family will greet friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 at Ferguson’s Funeral Home, O’Leary. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at Ferguson’s Funeral Home Chapel at 4:00 p.m. with Reverends Garth MacKay and Gordon Walker officiating. Burial will follow at a later date at Campbellton United Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Campbellton United Church Cemetery Fund or Community Hospital O'Leary Equipment Fund. www.fergusonsfh.com
