Neil Joseph MacLean died peacefully at Sunset Extendicare Home on March 1, 2019. He was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on October 15, 1942 to Elizabeth and Wallace MacLean, the eldest of four children. As a youth he was an accomplished hockey and ball player. In 1963, he joined the RCMP and trained in Ottawa, Ontario. Neil was transferred to Saskatchewan where he met and married Jean Bradshaw in 1967. Neil served many communities before transferring to Regina in 1981. In 1988, Neil retired from the RCMP and began a new career as the Chief Justice of the Peace for the province of Saskatchewan. Although Neil grew to love Saskatchewan, his heart remained in Cape Breton.
Of his many accomplishments, he was most proud of his “girls” and five grandchildren. Neil was pre-deceased by his parents, Jean’s parents, Floyd and Mary Bradshaw, his brother-in-law, Adrian Bates, sister-in-law, Marie MacLean and his niece Lisa Bradshaw. He leaves behind his wife of 51 years, Jean, daughter Heather Scholz (Richard) and Jaqueline MacLean (Gary Gareau) and his five beloved grandchildren Andrew, Mark and Paul Scholz and McKenna and Achala Gareau. He also leaves behind his sister, Donna Bates, brothers Jim (Rose) and Francis (Mary) MacLean as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Neil will be missed by many long-time friends including Wayne Knopp, Gary Owens, Jerry Hudy, Joe MacDougall and Archie MacKinnon.
The last years were not easy ones for Neil as he suffered from depression and finally Alzheimer’s. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at the RCMP Chapel at Depot Division, Regina, SK on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 2:00pm.
