Donald ‘Carter’ Gillis, 65, of Sydney Mines, passed away on Friday, March 8, 2019, at the Northside General Hospital.
Carter was the last surviving member of his immediate family being predeceased by his father, James ‘Jimmy’; his mother, Hazel (nee Forrest); sister, Heather and brother, Robert.
Carter is survived by one son, Chad and grandson, Howie, as well as a daughter, Jill with a grandson and a granddaughter. He is also survived by his aunt, Roberta, a nephew and many nieces and cousins.
Carter spent his early years in New Waterford and attended Calvin United Church. At the age of 28 he joined the French Foreign Legion and served for 12 years. Upon his return, he lived primarily in Sydney Mines, caring for his mother Hazel and he also had a long time attachment to Point Aconi. Carter worked as a welder and was a member of local 92 labourers union. He was able to put his hands to almost anything. One of his biggest passions were boats and he was very knowledgeable on the water.
As he travelled quite a bit, especially with the French Foreign Legion, he had a very worldly view and insight. He truly lived without fear, and was always willing to lend a helping hand, whether it was to a friend or a total stranger. He was a good man, and will be missed by many, especially by his good and longtime friend, Paul MacDonald.
Visitation for the late Carter Gillis will be from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Thurs., March 14, 2019 at Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home 8 Clyde Ave., Sydney Mines.
A Funeral Service will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday in the Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.
