Leona G. Sutton, age 93, passed away on March 27, 2019, in Orchard Court, Kentville. Born July 27, 1925, in Cambridge, Kings Co., NS, to the late Jeremiah and Mary Ann (Shaffer) Webster, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Leona worked as a telephone operator with MT&T in Wolfville prior to her marriage to David B. Sutton in 1948. She then became a farmer's wife and mother of four children, residing on the Sutton family mixed-farm in Starr's Point until 2015. She was a faithful member of St. John's Anglican Church, Church Street, Port Williams. She assisted her husband on the farm and every autumn served home-cooked meals to dozens of laborers who were billeted on the farm to assist with the harvest of apples and potatoes. Leona did enjoy some leisure time at the family cottage in Hall's Harbour. When her children had become older, she returned to the workforce as a switchboard operator at Acadia University and as a Guide at the Prescott House Museum. Leona is survived by her three daughters, Heather (Robert) Jones, Greenwich Ridge; Donna Sutton (Larry Yockell), Bridgewater and Anne (William) Trueman, Bennett's Bay Road; six grandchildren, Rebecca and Matthew (Iris Baeumler) Jones, Stephen and Alison Smith, Stephanie and Alex Trueman; and four great-grandchildren, Enan and Anyo Baeumler-Jones, and Issac and Chloe Mannette. Leona was predeceased by her son, David D. Sutton (1991), her husband, David B. Sutton (1998), four brothers, Stanley, Raymond, Gordon and Everett; and seven sisters, Lilah Jollimore, Violet Kelly, Clara Hill, Bertha Palmquist, Marjorie McIntyre, Joyce Moore, and Constance Hubbard. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation, by request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2019, in White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Maya Bevan officiating. A private family burial will take place at St. John's Anglican Church cemetery, Church Street, Port Williams, at a later date. The family wishes to thank the staff of Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, and Orchard Court, Kentville, for the exceptional care and attention given to Leona over the past three plus years she had been in Long-Term Care.
