Catherine Lago
With great sorrow we announce the passing of our much-loved and loving Mother, Catherine Lago, 89, of South Berwick, Maine. Mom passed away peacefully early in the morning, Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at her home surrounded by family.
She was born July 28, 1929 in Trepassey Newfoundland, Canada, the second daughter of William and Gertrude (Myrick) James. She married Henry (Bill) Lago, whose military career meant they would frequently uproot our ever-expanding family and move to a new city – or country. Whether in Texas, Georgia, Spain or Maine, Mom always made the new place a home for all of us. She was one of the most genuinely caring people to ever grace the world; every child should be so fortunate as to have such a Mom.
After Dad retired and we kids moved out, Mom had more time for other things she loved, like gardening; growing roses and colorful flowers, as well as landscaping with anything she could coax to root – which she shared through splicing. She admired the beauty of the Maine seacoast and enjoyed particularly strolling along Ogunquit's Marginal Way; but she still traveled -- through books, as an avid reader. In keeping with her Irish heritage, among her favorite activities was going out to tea with the ladies or attending tea parties hosted by one of her many grandchildren or great-grandchildren. And to go with the tea, all of us loved it when Mom baked, especially her oft-requested lemon meringue or apple pies.
We are grateful to have had her in our lives for so long; and grateful that she was aware and engaged to the end. She died as she lived, thinking of those she loved.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry W. Lago, her daughter, Glena Marie Sparks, her granddaughter, Lily Ann Lago and her brothers, George James and Gus James.
Surviving family include 7 of her 8 children: Don Lago (Paula) of Austin, Texas; Bill & Tracey Lago of North Berwick, Maine; Ed Lago, of North Berwick, Maine; Lenor Gaunya (Doug) of Barrington, N.H.; Cathy & Paul Bundy of Midway, Georgia; Tom & Donna Lago of Louisville, Kentucky; Bob & Della Lago of Dahlonega, Georgia; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters, Philomena Sutton and Colette Phelan; one brother, Edward James; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A time of visiting will be Monday April 15, 2019 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at the McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, Maine. Burial of her ashes in the family lot in St. Michael's Cemetery, Rollinsford, will follow the funeral.
