Wayne Russell Champion

It’s with great sadness we announce that Wayne Russell Champion peacefully passed away on March 27th in Nanaimo. Born in Kensington Prince Edward Island on November 4, 1939, Wayne is predeceased by his parents Lester and Mayme, and his brother Don. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 58 years Gloria, his sons Michael (Jacquie) and Craig (Tashia) and sister Eleanor (Jack) Dean. Wayne loved all sports and excelled in almost everything he played. He played defense for the 1956/57 Maritime high school championship hockey team, thoroughly trouncing Sydney Nova Scotia in their home rink. He played with the Kensington Bombers until he moved west to British Columbia in 1967 and he continued to be involved in hockey, coaching minor hockey until 1975. After his coaching career he moved to amateur motorcycle racing throughout BC and Washington State. In 1984 he took up sailing, buying his first boat a 27 foot Catalina. He enjoyed sailing and cruising throughout BC and Alaska with Gloria and the infamous Von Donlapes Skippers Club. Wayne and Gloria continued to actively sail and explore the BC coast on SV Skyamsen until 2009. Wayne began his working career with Island Telephone and then worked out west with BC Telephone/Telus until he retired in 1995 as a telephone pioneer. In keeping with Wayne's wishes there will be no service. He was cremated in Nanaimo, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson Society.
