It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Owen Peter Bryden, age 95, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend, on Sunday, April 7, 2019, at the Northside General Hospital, following a brief illness.
Born in North Sydney on December 18, 1923, Owen was the son of the late Roderick and Bernadette (Dolomont) Bryden.
He was employed with Marine Atlantic as a stevedore foreman until his retirement. Owen was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. In his youth Owen was a competitive speed skater in the Cape Breton area, winning many trophies and medals. Throughout his life, from an early age, he was an avid sailor and was a former Commodore of the Northern Yacht Club, North Sydney, and the last surviving member of the sailors who founded the Northern Yacht Club in its present location.
Owen is survived by his three daughters, Theresa (David) Hollett, Edmonton, AB, Patsy (Bruce) Anderson, Windsor, ON, Bernadette (Lennie) Thompson, Halifax, NS; by his son, Rod (Audrey) Bryden, North Sydney, NS; his six grandchildren, Peter (Marilyn), Matthew (Amanda) and James (Brenda) Hollett, Brittany Anderson, Christopher (Kelsea) Anderson and Owen Thompson; seven great-grandchildren, Abigail, Emma, MacKenzie, Madison, Bryden, Carys and Olivia, also a number of nieces and nephews.
Owen was predeceased by his wife, the love of his life, Leona (Penny) Bryden; a brother, John (Margaret) Bryden; two sisters, Mary (Louis) Marinelli and Rita (Alec) MacDougall.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Rita Astephen, for her many years of care to Mom and Dad. Thank you to the nurses of 5 East at the Northside General Hospital, especially, Jordan Popwell, who went above and beyond during Dads final hours.
And a very special thank you to Dr. John Kirkpatrick, for his care and friendship over the years, his thoughtfulness with Dad’s care is greatly appreciated and will be remembered by the family.
Visitation for Owen will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to the Junior Sailing Program at the Northern Yacht Club or to a charity of choice.
