Mary Eleanor Murphy

Mary Eleanor Murphy

On Monday, April 29, 2019, with broken hearts, we said goodbye to our dearest mother, Mary Eleanor Murphy. She was our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law, and friend. She was the mortar that held our family together and we will miss her always. She will live on in our hearts forever. Mom passed, at the age of 91, at the Northside General Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines on February 7, 1928, she was the daughter of the late James and Katie (Vickers) McIntosh.
After devoting her life raising her loving family, she ventured out as a sales clerk, both at Sextons and Haggetts dairies. Mom was happiest while spending her summers at the Katie -J in Kempt Head, where days were spent filled with family, fun and adventures. While raising a large family, her door was always open, there was a home cooked meal to be had and the chocolate chip cookies were always warm. She was known for her cooking and baking that she so enjoyed sharing, we teased she ran her own meals on wheels. She and her husband Gerald were very active in their church and community, a few being St. Joseph’s parish in North Sydney, St. Joseph’s CWL, the parish centre auxiliary the Knights of Columbus auxiliary and mixed dart league. She and her close friends formed a woman’s card club that met every Tuesday for over fifty years and later she joined the Northside Community Pool, North Sydney Food Bank and the auxiliary of the Northside Guest Home. After she lost our Dad she kept busy volunteering her time and doing for others.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Sandra Murphy (Walter), North Sydney; by her five sons, Jim (Marilyn), Ottawa, Jerry (Annette), Fall River, Gary (Lori), Dartmouth, Doug (Sandra) Annapolis Valley, Blair (Diana) Fall River; her eighteen grandchildren, Katie (Alden), Emily (Matthew), Hannah MacIntosh, Rob, Allison (Derek), Melissa (Trevor), Dennis (Antje), Kelly (Rob), Stephen, Caralee (Carl), Melissa (Marc), Alyson (Jason), Jamie (Jennie), Ashley (Andrew), Blake, Chrystal (Blayne), Jacob (Carolyn), Savannah (Chris), Devon (Mike) and by her twenty-two and a third great-grandchildren, all who she loved so dearly. Also surviving is Mary’s sister-in-law, Betty McIntosh; special cousin, Nellie Betts and many nieces and nephews, who loved their Aunt Mary.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald; her son, Kenneth Gerard; sisters, Margaret Sexton (Howard), Eva Snow (Cecil), Theresa MacDermid (Donald) and her brother, Doug McIntosh.
At this time, the family would like to thank the caring staff of the Northside Guest Home and 4W at the Northside General Hospital who took care of our every need.
Visitation for Mary will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday, at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Cremation will follow and burial at a later date in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. You were our sunshine Mom.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Church Improvement Fund.
Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
