Gordon A. MacPherson

Date de décès : 4 mai 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather and uncle Gordon A. MacPherson on Saturday May 4, 2019 at Northside General Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Sydney on December 18, 1921, he was the son of Archibald and Phoebe (MacDonald) MacPherson. Gordon spent his early years in Truro before returning to Sydney where he resided for the rest of his life.
Besides his parents he was pre-deceased by his wife, Beatie (Ripley); sisters, Shirley, Sydney, Jenny (Tory) MacKay, Glace Bay, Dorothy (Donald) Forbes, Glace Bay and Anna (Max) Wishart, Moncton, and nephew, Donnie (Ann) Ripley, Grand Mira.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Frank) Larade, Westmount, and son, Kent MacPherson, Sydney. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Stella (MacDonald) MacPherson and his three grandchildren, Kent MacPherson Jr., Leah MacPherson and Calum MacPherson, together with many much-loved nieces, grand-nieces, nephews and grand-nephews.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the Canadian Army as a signalman during the liberation of Holland. He always spoke fondly of his comrades and the people of the Netherlands.
After his return from overseas he was employed with the Dominion Coal Company (DEVCO) until his retirement at 65. He was a member of First United Church and the United Heritage Church after amalgamation and was very active in his church community, serving as an elder for many years. Some of his favorite time was with the “Monday Night Men” at First United.
He was a quiet, kind and gentle man with a very dry sense of humour. He was admired for his kindness and thoughtfulness to all those he met.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Harbourview Hospital, DVA unit, for their care of Dad in his last few years. He would often be found sitting with staff enjoying their conversations and being treated as one of their family. The family would also like to express their thanks to the staff at 4 West Northside General Hospital for their care and kindness during this last illness.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held Wednesday 11 a.m. in the chapel with Rev. Stephen Mills officiating. Interment will take place at Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
Words of Comfort may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or emailed to sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
“Well done, good and faithful servant, you have been faithful over a few things. I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” Matthew 25: 16-23.
