July 1, 1933 - April 25, 2019, George William “Bill” Lawrence, age 85, of Upper Falmouth, Hants County, passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2019, at the QE II, Halifax Infirmary. Bill was the son of Dick and Alice (O'Brien) Lawrence of Upper Falmouth, who farmed the rich dyke land of the Avon Valley. Bill was married to Cora (Hines) Lawrence, formerly of Windsor. Bill died shortly after the couple celebrated their 58th Wedding Anniversary. He was predeceased by his daughter, Elizabeth, Currys Corner, wife of Canon Eric MacDonald; his son, Marshall (Carol Segura), Ontario; and brothers, Jim and Charles Lawrence, Falmouth. Besides his wife, Cora, he is survived by his son, Victor (Martina) Lawrence, New Glasgow; Mark (Wendy) Lawrence, Kitchener, ON; and Christina (Blair) Baker, Falmouth. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Michael, David, Matthew, Kaylyn, Sydney, and Cameron. He is also survived by his sister, Marie Graham, Winnipeg; brothers, Bob (Jean), Brookfield; and Peter (Maureen), Liverpool. Bill had farming in his blood, and shortly after he and Cora married, they moved to Alberta where he did farm work, and where their first son was born. Known to some as “Wild Bill”, they returned to Nova Scotia. Bill did many different jobs, farming, construction, truck driving — you name it, he did it. His love of farming continued, and for many years Bill ran a hobby farm at the family home in Upper Falmouth, having a wide diversity of animals, including horses, ponies, cows, sheep, cats, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl, dogs, and the occasional chicken. Bill and Cora were very civic-minded, both being foster parents for many years, receiving an award from Premier Buchanan for their dedication. Bill, a proud Associate Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 009, Windsor, and was well-known for more than 100 blood donations over the years, for which he received an award from then MP Scott Brison. By making signs himself, Bill also made sure that official signs were placed identifying the community of Upper Falmouth, and often wished that the named hills of Upper Falmouth, such as Landing Hill on the Dyke Road, should also be signed. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. A public graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, 2019 at St. George’s Anglican Cemetery, Upper Falmouth. Rev. Tom Henderson and Canon Eric MacDonald officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the MS Society.
