It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Susanna Margaret MacDonald, age 84, on Monday, May 6, 2019 at the Northside Community Guest Home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Bateston, N.S. on March 26, 1935, Susie was the daughter of the late Austin and Alice (O’Neil) Bates. She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Mom loved knitting, sewing, cross stitch, bingo, socializing with family and friends and going for walks or talking on the telephone with her best friend Mary Power. Mom also loved going to pub night on Thursday’s with her daughter Jean where she had lots of laughs and made so many friends with the members of the Sydney Mines Volunteer Fire Department. She enjoyed spending time with all of her grandchildren, especially Stephen (her boy), who spent the majority of his spare time visiting with his nanny and making lots of special memories.
She is survived by her children, Lloyd, North Sydney, Paul (Patti), Sydney Mines, Alex, Mill Creek, Austin, North Sydney, Sandra (Emmie), North Sydney, Jean (Robert) Donovan, Sydney Mines; her eight grandchildren, Geoffrey, Brett, Joshua, Kristen, Alexandra, Loren, Katelyn, Stephen; two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn & Bennett; her sisters, Eileen Boutilier, Bateston, Rita Bates and Theresa MacDonald, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Williamena and Iris Bates; brother-in-law, Charlie (Bernice) Sampson, sister-in-law, Patricia MacDonald and many special nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd MacDonald; daughter-in-law, Lorna MacDonald; sisters, Marie White, Alice Wilcox; brothers, John, David, Alex, Herman, Jimmy and Gerard Bates and three infant siblings.
The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. John Kirkpatrick, North Sydney, the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home, Harbourstone, Wentworth Court, Sydney, Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford, the Northside Homemakers, Harbourview Day Program, Sydney Mines, Crown Taxi, Sydney Mines, moms family, friends and neighbors for all their care, love and support given to mom during her illness. You all have a special place in our hearts.
Visitation for Susanna will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
