It is with great sadness that the family of Elbert William White, age 78 of Amherst, announce his passing surrounded by family on Thursday, May 23, 2019 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst. Born in Amherst, he was the son of the late Arthur and Stella (Hickey) White. Elbert worked at Dorchester Penitentiary and Springhill Penitentiary for over 32 years as a Social Worker. He obtained his education through Saint Mary’s University earning his Bachelor of Arts degree and majored in Sociology. Elbert enjoyed playing his trumpet in Amherst Legion Band, Parrsboro Band, Sackville Military Band and Captains Combo Dance Band. Elbert instructed the boating course for Abegweit Power and Sail Squadron. He was also a member of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. Elbert was a faithful parishioner of Holy Family Church, Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Liturgy Committee and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed spending time on the water and at his cottage with family and friends.
Elbert will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by his wife Marguerite (Melanson); children Karen (Kevin) Moore, Barry (Amy), Timothy, David (Twyla) and Linda (Kevin) Cole; 8 grandchildren; sister Dureen Coade; brother Glen (Anita); sisters-in-law Ada (Hal) Ramsay, Anne Kent, Kathy (Junior) Estabrooks, Evelyn Ayer and Marian Locy; brothers-in-law Malcolm “Mac” (Rose) Melanson, Dave Melanson and many nieces and nephews. Elbert was predeceased by his brothers-in-law John Kent, Leon Melanson, Ernie Melanson, Oscar Locy, George Ayer and Jim Coade. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 27, 2019 from 6- 8pm held in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St. Amherst, 902-667-9906. Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 11 am in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Amherst with Father Craig Christenson officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in St. Charles- Nativity Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Elbert’s memory to St. Vincent de Paul Society.
